I adopted my first dog from the SCPA in Charleston, S.C. 12 years ago, a red tick coonhound named Sadie. Over the years, she has been the best friend I could have ever imagined. She was there as I prepared for my wedding day, wagged her tail eagerly when we brought home our babies from the hospital, and has been by my side through tears and laughter. Yes, she is guilty of eating my daughter’s entire birthday cake, specially designed from Ivey Cake, ran away once and created enough messes for a lifetime! She is as stubborn as the day is long, bosses us all around but her unconditional love is priceless.
October is National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. Author and ASPCA Ambassador Katherine Schwarzenegger’s book, Maverick and Me is the sweetest children’s story of animal rescue. The story joins abandoned puppy Maverick on his journey to find his forever home. Not only did my children love this book but it reminded me of the special times that we have gone to the shelter to pick out our furry, family members. Maverick and Me almost convinced me to go adopt another pet. However, we currently have two rescued dogs and a crazy cat so our animal house is full!
Schwarzenegger has a real life dog, Maverick and she blogs about their adventures, shares messages of hope, and the joys of finding forever friends through pet rescue.
If your child has a tender heart for animals, they will definitely enjoy this book!
The fine folks at Worthy Kids/Ideals sent me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
