Maverick and Me: Book Review

I adopted my first dog from the SCPA in Charleston, S.C. 12 years ago, a red tick coonhound named Sadie. Over the years, she has been the best friend I could have ever imagined. She was there as I prepared for my wedding day, wagged her tail eagerly when we brought home our babies from the hospital, and has been by my side through tears and laughter. Yes, she is guilty of eating my daughter’s entire birthday cake, specially designed from Ivey Cake, ran away once and created enough messes for a lifetime! She is as stubborn as the day is long, bosses us all around but her unconditional love is priceless.

October is National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. Author and ASPCA Ambassador Katherine Schwarzenegger’s book, Maverick and Me is the sweetest children’s story of animal rescue. The story joins abandoned puppy Maverick on his journey to find his forever home. Not only did my children love this book but it reminded me of the special times that we have gone to the shelter to pick out our furry, family members. Maverick and Me almost convinced me to go adopt another pet. However, we currently have two rescued dogs and a crazy cat so our animal house is full!

Schwarzenegger has a real life dog, Maverick and she blogs about their adventures, shares messages of hope, and the joys of finding forever friends through pet rescue.

If your child has a tender heart for animals, they will definitely enjoy this book!

The fine folks at Worthy Kids/Ideals sent me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

No No No Toddler Book Club

Spirited child, strong willed, terrible twos, wild child, reason why I drink, or whatever it is you call this phase in toddlerhood, I’ve been experiencing it for a good year now. Don’t get me wrong, two year olds come with the best cuddles and “I love you Mommys,” but dang it if they don’t make… Continue Reading

Toddler Book Club: My Llama Don’t Like You

Close your eyes and image this scenario. You and your spouse go out to dinner at 8 p.m. You order drinks, you order appetizers, and you don’t care what’s on the kids menu. You keep your phone in your purse. You talk and listen to each other at dinner and decide to go out for… Continue Reading

Chicka Chicka Book Club

My son just turned two and loves practicing his letters and numbers, so we are really enjoying rereading some of the first books he received as a baby. I’ve always loved reading to him, but it’s so much more fun now that he can help read with me by pointing out letters and objects he… Continue Reading

All Aboard February Toddler Book Club

It all started so innocently. I thought I would purchase a small Thomas the Train toy for my almost two year old for Christmas. He loved “choo choos,” so I didn’t see the harm in getting him the little blue train. I flipped over the package to check the safety information and read that it… Continue Reading

Honk if you love January Toddler Book Club!

When I found this book, I knew my son would love it. I’d like to say I thought he’d be impressed with the plot, but he probably wouldn’t care about what I was reading to him if the book had buttons like this one. Now that we’re recovering from the holidays, I thought you may appreciate… Continue Reading

Toddler Book Club: Holiday Edition

Oh, the holidays. Everyone tells you how much more fun they are once you have kids, and they are right! Ever since December 1 hit, I’ve been doing my best to create as many holiday traditions as possible, but between Santa sightings, elf hiding, cookie baking, shopping and Christmas lights viewing, I’ve actually been pretty… Continue Reading

November Toddler Book Club, What Do You See?

With so many things to be thankful for this season, I’m most thankful of the time I get to spend with my son. And with all of the busyness of this time of the year, I’m always grateful for a few minutes each night to sit down with him and read a book before bedtime.… Continue Reading

If you’ve followed my Toddler Book Club posts, you know that I’m a huge fan of story time. What mom doesn’t love winding down for the evening with a good book and a snuggly kiddo on her lap? I’m always looking for good books to share with my son, which is why I jumped at the… Continue Reading
