If you spend any amount of time in a mom’s Facebook group or just chatting with new moms, you will inevitably hear that someone is struggling with making friends. I’m not sure what it is about becoming a mom that makes us all friend-less. Maybe that we’re the first to have babies and stay home, maybe we just moved into a new town, maybe we just have extra time on our hands and want to fill it with new friendships. Whatever the case, I hate to hear when moms are lonely. Lonely is horrible, I know that first-hand. So, what do we do about it?
5 Ways to make new mommy-friends
1. Head to a park
Pick a park, any park. This time of year, you will see it swimming with mommas and kiddos. Without fail, there will be another mom there looking for a new friend, too. This is difficult, I realize, especially if you’re not an extroverted person. But, if you are, this is a fun place to take the plunge into friendship.
2. Coordinate a meetup in an online group
You’re probably already a part of some Facebook mommy group. If you aren’t, check out this list of groups to join:
- Nashvlle Moms Group
- Music City 20s Moms
- Crunchy Parents of Middle TN
- Naturally Minded Moms of Middle Tennessee
- Moms of East Nashville
If you want to meet people, sometimes you have to be the one to take the first step. Tell everyone that you’re going to be at some place at a certain time and would love to meet them. Bribe them with popsicles if you must. On the flipside, if someone is coordinating a meetup, JUMP ON IT! Don’t talk yourself out of it. Just show up and if it sucks, don’t go again. Lesson learned.
3. Join an existing playgroup
There are a few groups you can pay a small fee to join and have organized activities each month.
My personal favorite is TNM Members Group, of course. For $30 you’ll have access to playgroups and special events as well as a Facebook group where we all chat and coordinate get-togethers.
4. Just join something
- Gym
- Gymnastics
- Mother’s Day Out
- Bible Study
- Little Sluggers
- Art class
- Gymboree
- Kid-friendly yoga classes
These are great places to run into the same people over and over. They likely have a similar schedule to you. Ask them to grab lunch or coffee or head over to the park to burn off extra energry.
5. Check out TNM events
While hosting big events is great and fun, some of our smaller events are the perfect setting for making a new friend or two. We regularly host Girl’s Nights Out and other fun playdate activities. We are starting up a new Ladies Fare Club series with Homestead Manor this month. If you want a way to get out of the house to relax, learn something new, and meet some new friends, this is an excellent place to start.
What did we miss? Where did you make a new friend recently? Is there another group we didn’t add to the list? Let us know in the comments!
