Many people think it requires special equipment to be able to make their own baby food. We’re here to tell you that it doesn’t. You can make your baby delicious, homemade foods with the things you already have in your kitchen.
In fact, all you really need is a fork. Do you have one of those?
For baby’s first foods- try banana, avocado, or maybe a sweet potato. Simply slice it up and smash it. (cook the sweet potato) Really, anything you have cooked for yourself for a meal, if it is soft enough, you can just smash it with a fork and feed it to baby. If it’s too thick, add a little breastmilk or water to thin it.
So, tool #1- FORK
Some other really basic tools you may eventually need…
Pots & pans- You know, to cook the food in. :)
Steamer basket– This is a great tool to use to cook some of the different foods. It definitely isn’t necessary, but it can be very helpful.
Blender or Food Processor– You can use either of these or both. I started with using a food processor, but eventually switched to a blender. I just liked the consistency better out of a blender.
Ice cube trays– This is a pretty important one if you plan to make big batches of food to freeze. I really love these because they come out in perfect little squares, but you can use any trays you can find or already have.
Saran wrap- When you put the food in the ice cube trays to freeze, you’ll need to cover them with some wrap.
Ziplock bags- Once the food is frozen, you’ll need to store it in plastic bags. We suggest writing the type of food and date you made it on the bag. Trust us, you won’t remember. :)
If we had unlimited funds, here are some other things we would buy to help with food making…
Beaba Babycook Pro– This is a neat option for making food. It has a lot of features- like steam, blend, defrost, and reheat. If you don’t already have a blender and are going to be buying something anyway, this would be a cool thing to have.
Infantino Squeeze Station– If you prefer to store your food in pouches, this little station makes it easy to fill your own.
Wean Green Wean Cubes– If you like glass containers, these are a really great option for food storage.
OXO Tot Baby Blocks– Another food storage option. These cubes come with a tray to sit them in.
The Best Homemade Baby Food on the Planet– This is a really great book for recipe ideas. You’ll use it for more than just recipe ideas though. It has a lot of information in it.
Skip Hop Bento Kit– We love this for taking your homemade food on the go. You can drop a couple cubes in the bowl snap on the lid and have a delicious meal for baby while you’re out.
