At the beginning of 2015 I found out that our family was expecting baby number 3. The first thing I did after hearing the news was to start trying to figure out a birth plan. A big part of that involved getting a midwife and possibly delivering at home.
When I started researching I noticed many midwives didn’t accept insurance which was a bit discouraging. Finally, I came across a post raving about the opening of Baby+Co, a birthing center that caters to women who want to have a out-of-hospital experience and wish to have a natural birth.
After the first meeting, I knew right away it was the perfect place to give birth to baby number 3. I immediately switched over to seeing their midwives and was beyond satisfied with each visit, class, and every staff member I came across. My husband and two younger kids were always being encouraged to engage at the appointments, which was great! We also had the opportunity to meet every staff member. This made us feel welcomed and comfortable when it was time to give birth.
When it came time to have the baby I remember calling Baby+Co and then getting a call back telling me to go ahead and head to the center. It was super late at night, but when I arrived my midwife, Margaret Buxton, and my nurse, Heather Barksdale, were there with the room ready. I immediately noticed the essential oils they were diffusing, which helped calm me. I was allowed to move around the room freely with no needles or wires hanging from me. I remember looking at Margaret and saying “Aren’t you going to tell me what to do?”.
Clearly, this was nothing like my two other birth experiences where nurses and staff were barking orders or putting restrictions on what I should do. They truly let my body tell me what I should or shouldn’t be doing, which I loved. I was able to hop in the shower to ease some pains and when it was time to push I was able to do so in the position of my choosing on the bed.
Baby number 3 was born without any issues, perfectly healthy. The first thing I remember saying was “thank you” because the experience was amazing and exactly what I had dreamed. They let me hold the baby for as long as I wanted without immediately taking her away and I was able to comfortably rest with no distractions. Lauren Drees took over as my nurse until I left and she was amazing. Heather gave the baby a vital check-up right there in the room which was nice and transitioning between staff members was seamless. All of them were great!
After the baby was born I was able to go home 6 hours later. At first, I wasn’t a fan of the thought, but let me tell you, it helped out so much being able to jump right into the normal life, especially with having the two other little ones. I felt amazing and was up and out the next day. I kept smiling because I was so happy to be home and able to move around without pain.
After the birth, Baby+Co did such an amazing job keeping in contact with me and helping me with any questions I had. Each and every one of these ladies are truly amazing and are such angels. I’m so happy that I made one of the best choices ever when it comes to having my baby by choosing Baby+Co. I would highly recommend any expecting mom to swing by and check it out!
