We all know that keeping fit and healthy during pregnancy is so beneficial for both Mom and baby. Working out makes you feel better physically and mentally, can make labor shorter, it lowers the risk of gestational diabetes, you’ll have more energy, you’ll bounce back faster after baby, are less likely to swell, it will help you sleep, and much more! With so many benefits, why wouldn’t you want to keep fit while pregnant?
I am currently 18 weeks pregnant with my second child, and thankfully, I’m in a good habit of working out 5-6 days a week. However, the bigger (and more tired) I get, the harder it is to stay motivated. Recently, I decided to google “best prenatal fitness classes in Nashville.” I wanted to try something new, but quickly realized this list does not exist. After a few minutes of frustration, I decided, Hey, why not create the list myself! Which brings us to today’s review – the first in a series of reviews I will be sharing about prenatal fitness in Nashville!
My first prenatal-appropriate fitness class in Nashville is DANCEFIX at the Nashville Ballet. For me, dance is a blast! It’s always been a type of workout that doesn’t even feel like I’m working out because I’m having SO much fun. Then, I stop and realize I’m drenched in sweat! DANCEFIX was no exception, this class was a high-intense aerobic workout that is made for the heart and soul of a dancer (or anyone who loves the arts!).
This 60 minute class, which is more like a dance party, takes place at the School of Nashville Ballet, currently held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It’s a super exclusive class because as of right now, it is only taught in Cincinnati and Nashville! By taking the class you are not only going to sweat your little booty off, but you’re going to pick up some amazing choreography and dance skills from everything from hip-hop and jazz to African and lyrical.
I’m not gonna lie, if you have zero dance experience, the class will be a challenge. BUT, it’s set up as a community that supports everyone. No one is taking themselves too seriously. It is not at all competitive and everyone is so supportive, especially the teachers. The teachers are some of the most motivating and dynamic instructors I have ever experienced.
If you are an experienced dancer, I can promise you it will still be mentally and physically challenging. You are going to want to push yourself to go full out, perform and honestly, you won’t be able to help yourself! There are 10 songs each week. One song changes each week, and each new song lasts for 10 weeks. So whether you’re new to dance, or a former high school dancer, like myself, you’ll want to keep coming back to better learn each and every dance move.
And, what if you’re currently expecting? As long as you have your doctor’s permission, it’s totally safe, fun and even good for you. I wouldn’t recommend going full out in your third trimester, but it’s important to listen to your body and recognize what is good for you. Due to the weight distribution of the baby you’re carrying, you may be slightly off-balance, so always be careful when it comes to balancing, jumping and fast movements. Because DANCEFIX is such a positive and supportive environment, you could literally come in, move to the music however you want and still get in a workout! What’s important is that you’ll have the support of the community, the energy from the class, the connection with yourself and the baby and all those good dance vibes.
I was fortunate enough to get to chat with Shabaz Ujima, one of the incredible instructors and Nashville Ballet faculty members, and I can assure you that they are not only talented and driven, but so caring and helpful. Shabaz talked with me for a good hour about all things DANCEFIX.
