Every mom knows that our babies grow too fast. We are constantly trying to freeze time and remember every special moment. A lot of the time, that is a quick snap on our camera phone so we can go back and smile or laugh at the memories, but sometimes, we need more. We want those precious smiles captured and memories saved, but it can be difficult and frustrating to capture the moment ourselves. That’s where a professional can come in handy.

Hiring a professional can unnecessary or even like a hassle, but we really believe that professional photos are a great investment. We even have proof! We went on a photo shoot with Tausha of Tausha Ann Photography and took the same pictures as she did. Everything was exactly the same- same lighting, stood in the same spots, shot at the same angles- the only difference? We used an iPhone and she used her professional equipment.

#1- Stress

Mom– Your life is already stressful enough. Let a professional help you with picking out outfits and location. Plus, trying to get the kids to sit still and not hit each other and not dig in the dirt while you also try to take the photo yourself is an almost impossible task. Let someone else worry about it. Plus, kids generally behave better for other people than you.

Professional– My number one goal working with my clients is to make sure that their session is as stress free as possible. Being able to meet with you prior to the shoot and help you pick out clothes, choose the location, etc… so all you need to do is show up!

#2-Technology and training 

Mom– Many moms have become professional iPhone photographers, but the capabilites of the phone and you can only go so far. Every photo editing app in the world isn’t going to give you the same results as a professional photographer with high quality equipment and photo editing knowledge will. Even if you upgrade to a nicer DSLR camera, unless you have studied the right way to use it and also how to edit the photos on the backend, you aren’t going to produce the same high quality results.

Professional– The iPhone can take amazing photos and I use it often. The thing about iPhones is they do not preform very well in low light and in any tricky lighting situations. This is where having a professional who understands lighting is key.  Even in the toughest lighting situations a professional can find light whether it be natural or artificial. Another thing… Photographers are quick and our cameras are too! We rarely miss that moment because when we are with you we are ready to shoot!

It isn’t just about the nice camera either, it’s about the experience of the photographer and their ability to know which angles are best, what certain lighting will do to an image and knowing how the final image will look once edited. These all come with years of experience.

#3- Print quality

Mom– Once you- or hopefully your photographer- take those amazing images of your family, you’ll want to print them to show off to the world, right? There’s a reason that photo prints from Shutterfly don’t cost very much- because the quality isn’t made to last. You’ll find your prints won’t look as great over time. A major plus to having a professional is that they will be able to get you the high quality prints that your images deserve. You may pay a little more on the front-end but the prints will last much longer and look so much better hanging in your house. Plus, your photographer will be able to make sure your photos are formatted and fit correctly for the print.

Professional– As a consumer you are limited on the labs that you can order your images from. If you tell any professional photographer that you are getting your images printed at Walgreens, Walmart or Shutterfly you will see them CRINGE!  (Here is a link to a comparision of original files printed at consumer labs) Photographers have the ability to print at labs that consumers do not have access to that offer high quality images that will last YEARS and YEARS to come!

#4- Visual Storytelling

Mom– Professional photographers know how to tell a story. They capture your personalities in an image. It almost seems like you’re watching a video about your family, but it’s just still images. The best pictures seem to be the ones you didn’t know were being taken. Photos of you genuinely interacting with your children. Moments that may soon be forgotten are now documented forever. There is no value you can put on that.

Professional– Take all the camera and photoshop capabilities out of it and it really comes down to this: Photographers are visual storytellers. They know how to step into your world and capture you and your family in all of their glory.

#5- Mom, get in the picture!

Mom– Anyone else have literally 3 pictures with you AND the kids? If you’re taking the picture, it’s pretty hard to get into the picture. The best thing about hiring someone else to take the pictures is that mom and dad can be in the picture, too. It’s nice to have some proof that you were actually there for all of these memories.

Professional– The absolute NUMBER 1 reason you need to hire a photographer is so you can exist in the photos. You must exist in the photos.
