It’s March and in our house that means nonstop basketball. Sure, football is great, but basketball is better. We’re all pretty obsessed with it around here. So, why not have a party to celebrate our love for the March college basketball games?!
One thing I don’t like about most “sports-themed” parties is the standard decorations. They’re just too boring for me. I want to have a party that’s fun, sporty, AND pretty. I don’t think that’s too much to ask. Of course, it can’t be too pretty or the boys won’t be able to handle it. So, for our college basketball party, I thought some geometric black and white would be perfect. It’s cute and themed, but still edgy and just manly enough that the guys won’t roll their eyes.
In an attempt to keep the decor budget minimal, I took some simple items I already had on hand to create a pretty tablescape. Black and white streamers for the wall, awesome plates and cups with a great black and white pattern, and some simple cardstock signs for the food display. I love the clean look of everything.
The most important part of any party is the food. What will everyone be eating while they cheer on their favorite team? We had Rebound that {meat}balls, pizza {wheel} offense, fastbreak funfetti cookies, and buzzer beater popcorn (recipe below). Coming up with names for the food items was the most difficult part of this party, but definitely worth the challenge.
Buzzer Beater Popcorn
Ingredients:
-unflavored popcorn, I used 1 cup (unpopped)
-orange candy melts, about 1/4 cup
-candy of choice, I chose chocolate pieces
Start by popping your popcorn. Follow the package directions.
Then, melt your orange candy melts.
Finally, mix your candy melts and chocolate in with the popcorn. You could also drizzle it on top if you don’t want the popcorn coated with it.
Serve to your friends!
After spending half of the day in the kitchen cooking and cleaning, I was so glad to have picked up some Advil last time I stopped by Walmart. There was still so much decorating and fun to be had! Nothing’s stronger, longer lasting or better on your tough aches and pains than Advil* (*Among OTC brands)
I always try to keep Advil around the house, especially during basketball season. All of that cheering can get you worn out really quick and Advil keeps me in the game.
One of my favorite things about this college basketball party was the Create A Sign competition. Everyone has a chance to make their own “gameday” sign and then we vote for the winner! There are even some fun noisemakers so you can cheer on your team from the couch. I was super thankful for that Advil when the noisemakers came out!
Possibly the highlight of the entire event (for the men in the crowd) was the giant bracket I put up on the wall. Sure, the paper printouts are great, but this is HUGE! It was relatively simple and inexpensive to put together. You just need some washi tape, a ruler, and a pencil to mark your spots.
First, make sure to measure out your space and then divide it by the number of lines you need to start with. I found it a lot easier to work from the outside in towards the middle.
Once I had the first 16 lines up on each side, the rest went pretty quickly since you don’t really have to measure as much. If you’re a big perfectionist, you may take a little longer to get perfect measurements.
As each team wins, we’ll write it on some paper and tape it in on the appropriate line. Ta-da! You’re the coolest wife/girlfriend ever. You’re welcome, ladies.
Note: People always ask if washi tape hurts my walls. I’ve never had a problem with it and I’ve used it for many projects.
This party was so fun to set up and I really tried to keep it low-key so that it wouldn’t become to stressful. I want to enjoy the games, too!
How do you get prepared for March college basketball games? Don’t forget to use your coupon to pick up Advil next time you’re at the store.
