You may be wondering what in the world is a momboss. Let us enlighten you…
There is this whole group of moms out there- ones that work for themselves. They own their own businesses. They may work part-time, full-time, from an office, from home, from the bench at the park, when the kids finally go to bed late at night, or maybe they are up before the rest of the house. And, we think they are pretty awesome!
Disclaimer: we think ALL moms are awesome
Owning a business is like have another child and the same things that pull on your heart with your children, pull at you with your business, too. Obviously, your children will always come first but it can be really hard. It’s hard to own a business. Period. Whether or not you have kids. And we know being a mother can be hard. And all you mombosses are out there doing it everyday.
To honor the moms out there kicking booty and taking names we’ve created this series. We want to showcase the mombosses of the world. We want to be inspired by them, be able to seek advice from them, and most of all, support them. We really hope you enjoy this series of “interviews” with some great ladies.
Meet Heather of House on a Hill Photography.
Hey, Heather! Tell us about your kids. What are their names and ages?
Abigail (10), Kellen (8), Lyric (5), and August (1)
How long have you been in business?
For a little over 4 years now.
Why did you start your business?
People were responding to my personal photography work, and asking me to do it for them as well. So I decided to turn it into a business!
What inspired you or pushed you to decide to go into business for yourself?
Other strong mothers that I know that started their own companies. They are such an inspiration and I want to be that for others as well.
Hardest part of being in business for yourself and having children?
Umm, the office noise level? lol Children come first. And no matter how much work I have to accomplish, their needs have to take priority which can be hard at times.
Best part of being in business for yourself and having children?
I get to be at home with them and still have the pride and pleasure of being a business woman. I am very grateful for that.
Your tip for moms trying to be mom bosses too?
I think my biggest thing that I have learned is when I let myself get TOO consumed in my work, my fuse with my kids gets really short. So I have learned when they are in need to not feel REALLY extra annoyed just because I happen to be up to my ears in work load. I still have to approach my kids with love and gentleness, and at the end of the day that is what I am going to feel MOST accomplished for achieving, not having conquered all those wedding edits. Though that would feel good too. ;)
How do you relax or wind down after a long day/week?
Some good tea, and quiet after the kids go to bed is really all I ask for in life. :)
What is your favorite thing to do in Nashville with your kids?
I love taking them downtown by the Cumberland to that little park area with the hills. They love it down there, and it was one of the first places we visited when we first moved here so it is special to us.
Where is your favorite place to eat in Nashville?
Five Points Pizza is pretty delicious. Yeast Nashville is the best carbs ever. And Jack’s BBQ is a family fav.
