Welcome Nikki Burdine from WKRN News to The Nashville Mom today! She is here today to tell us her story!
Hometown: Kingsport, TN
Favorite Nashville spot: I can’t pick just one! For just walking around, I love Percy Warner Park, Centennial Park! I also love walking around and shopping in Hillsboro Village or 12 South.
What do you do when you’re off camera: When I am off camera, I am probably hanging out at the house. I usually go to the gym after work (SHED workouts are the best/worst!) and then cuddle and play with my dog Reggie White and cat Louis. My husband works from home so we can spend more time together.
What is something that viewers don’t see from the news team: That we are all hot messes. Kidding (sort of). Most people think we have this big crew of people who help us get ready in the morning, doing our hair and makeup and all that. That’s not true at all. I usually do my makeup at my desk in a tiny mirror while reading scripts. Which is why sometimes I might look like a clown on TV.
How did you get your start in the news? I majored in journalism in college, and knew that’s what I always wanted to do, but I wanted to live in a big city straight out of college. Most TV journalists have to start their careers in a small town to get their feet wet. I’m stubborn though, and took a bit of a detour to Washington, DC. I lived there and worked for the Redskins and their radio station for a few years before getting my first on-air job in Hagerstown, MD right outside of DC. I was there for a few years where I carried my own camera and tri-pod (about 40 lbs!) and did it all by myself! From there I moved to Lexington, KY and anchored weekends, then I moved back to Washington, DC and worked as a reporter at the CBS station. After a few years there, I knew it was time to go home. I got lucky and landed this incredible job at WKRN and I’ve never looked back.
What is the best part of bringing the news to Nashville each morning? I honestly, genuinely love what I do. Every day there is something different, I learn something new or I meet someone new.
You post animal rescue pictures on Instagram each week. How did you get involved with that? I am a crazy animal lady. I have always rescued animals, since I was a kid. My animals now are both rescues, and if my husband didn’t stop me we would have a house full and there would be a situation. One of the best parts about my job is I have a platform to make a difference. My passion is animals and promoting adoption, so I love to feature adoptable dogs and cats from our local humane societies to get them adopted! If I can get those dogs and cats adopted or convince a few people to go to the shelter instead of a breeder, I’ve succeeded.
What do viewers ask you the most? The number one question I get asked is what time do I wake up? I wake up at 2:30AM. Well, that’s when my first alarm goes off. I usually roll out of bed at 2:40 and I have to be in by 3! Yes, it’s hard to get up, but just like most people who get up at 6 or 8AM, waking up is hard. Once you’re up, it’s not so bad. Plus, my work day is done at noon and I have most of the day to do whatever I want! I do go to bed at 6pm, which is rough sometimes when there is an event or a game I want to go to!
