Did you know Nashville is home to the #4 children’s theatre in the country?
Nashville Children’s Theatre is Tennessee’s only fully producing theatre exclusively for families and young audiences. Each year they host thousands of people including many students from area schools.
NCT has an amazing line up this season. They are currently featuring Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach. We were so excited to be invited to check it out a couple of weeks ago.
James and the Giant Peach is about an orphaned boy who falls into custody of his horrible aunts (who are actually one of the funniest parts of the show). One day, the backyard peach tree grows a giant peach which James and a group of creepy crawlers roll off together in on an amazing adventure.
In my opinion, this show is a great “starter” show if you haven’t taken your children to the theatre before. It’s funny, the costumes are awesome, and most kids can relate to the bugs and the peach. Some of the songs will definitely be playing in your head for a few days.
There is no set-in-stone age recommendation. You know your kids and what they will enjoy. I took my three-year-old and he was pretty in to it. I definitely think if it would have been a daytime show instead of later at night, he would have liked it even more.
One of the great features that NCT has is soundproof viewing rooms in the back of the theatre. That way, you can take your children out if they need to get up and move some. No one can hear them and you can still see the show. There are also tv’s in the lobby so you can stand out there and still see the show as well.
Make sure to get to the show early so participate in the fun activities in the lobby! Before every performance, there are show-related activities to do. We made a rhino puppet.
James and the Giant Peach will be showing until December 14. You can catch a show on Saturdays or Sundays at 2:00 each week. Make sure to check for special events and sensory-friendly performances.
