Spring is almost here! That means, it just about time for some Spring cleaning. The closet seems like a good place to start.
I would guess that we all have too much in our closets to begin with. But, how do you decide what to get rid of? We’ve got a list of questions to help you out. :)
First, get 3 boxes or make 3 piles- KEEP, DONATE, TOSS
If you wear it and love it, go ahead and put it in your KEEP box.
Then, use these questions to help you decide:
Have you worn it in the last 6 months? Not sure if you’ve worn it? Try flipping your hangers around the wrong way. Once you’ve worn it, put it back with the hanger the right way. Then, after 6 months, any hangers that are still aren’t turned, get rid of.
Does it fit? If it doesn’t fit, what are you holding on to it for? Unless you plan to take it to the tailor to get it altered, it has to get out!
Do you look good in it? Do you feel good? If you don’t look good in it, then don’t keep it. You need to feel confident when you wear something. If not, get rid of it.
Is it torn/stained/broken? Will you get it fixed? If it’s broken beyond repair, toss it. If it’s something you will get fixed, put it in a bag right now to take to the tailor.
Does it fit your lifestyle? If you work at home everyday, you probably don’t need 10 suits hanging in the closet. You know what you need, just be honest with yourself.
Would you buy it right now? If it isn’t something that you would buy right now, it’s time to get rid of it. Also, when you’re out shopping keep in mind- if it isn’t something you would pay full price for, then you shouldn’t buy it on sale. In other words, don’t buy things just because they are on sale.
Now, once you’ve got everything sorted, put your KEEP back in the closet, take your DONATE to your organization of choice, and TOSS anything you need to.

What great tips! I have so many things that I have not worn in the last 6 months, and probably even more that does not fit. I think it is time for me to tackle my closets! I am definitely a spring cleaner! everything gets shoved to the back until I get so frustrated I need to clear it out! Thanks for all the great tips, this is on my to do list this weekend!

Thank you! I did my closet last weekend. It’s nice to be able to see what I actually have to wear and what was just filling in the space. Much easier to get dressed each day. :)

A tip to help keep it that way: place a donation bag (I like using a tote bag or hamper) right in your closet. If you decide you don’t need/want an item, drop it in. When the bag is full, take it away for donation!

I clean out my closet twice a year – once in the fall and once in the spring. The transitional seasons are great for donating some clothes away, which in my opinion is the best way to clean it out. Cheers, Gail.
