Christmas traditions are the stuff of movies. I just love knowing every year the same thing will happen, and it’s all wrapped up in sentimental value with years of memories behind it. These are the immaterial things we get to pass down to our kids. The things they will look back on and treasure.
This year I decided to reach out to some friends to ask their favorite holiday traditions. For those of us still trying to set family traditions in stone, these are all great places to start.
Bernice Nelms: “Every year the kids have a 5×7 picture taken with Santa at the mall. I use them all as decorations. It’s great to see how they change each year. I tell them as long as they live in our home the pic must be taken. 16,18, 20 years old …
Cara Davis: “We began building our own traditions with the kids by staying home for the first time a couple of years ago. It was then I found out how much I took my mom’s Christmas dinner for granted. After burning the turkey breast, we loaded up the kids and went to McDonald’s for Christmas dinner (since it was the only place open). Our youngest had never eaten there before, and although normally a picky eater, she ate every stupid bite. So then we decided McDonald’s on Christmas Day would be the perfect tradition to start.
Chrissy Clayton: “Each child gets to pick out an ornament each year that reflects something special. Macey got a dancer for her first year of dance. We write their name and year on them and they are so sweet to look back over!”
April Annette: “We do scavenger hunts every night for the advent calendar.
The first clue goes in the calendar. The kids love it!”
Dominique Sneed: “Since I started my own family, every year we have a big day at Disneyland on Christmas Eve then stay in a hotel until Christmas. We go home and have a quiet day with family then go see a movie on Christmas night. I love it because we have tons of fun and meaningful family time as well.”
Katie Barnes: “My mother-in-law gives us a Santa mug every year and signs her name and the year on the bottom.”
Heather Andrew: “Cooper rings Santa’s bell when he wakes up Christmas morning. I love waking up to his quiet excitement!
Bethany Pepin: “Our traditions are still fairly new since the girls are so little, but I let the girls plan a birthday party for Jesus that we have on Christmas (or sometimes Christmas Eve). They love it and it really drives home for them the reason for the season.”
Evan Owens: “Santa also makes an appearance every Christmas Eve night at my grandmother’s house while we are there having dinner. He usually runs through the yard ringing a bell!”
Mary Margaret Byrd: “The girls still sleep on a blow up mattress in my bedroom on Christmas Eve. Mary Kate is 22 now and recently told me that when she has children they will all still be in my bedroom when Santa visits!”
Tiffany Tolbert: “We don’t do this, but I heard it on the radio once and hope I have a baby girl to do it with … A mom took her daughters every year to look at ornaments. They picked their favorite but were only there to look. The mom secretly went back every year and bought the ornament and then saved them. On their wedding days she gave them the box to start their tree with. Cue hysterical sobs.”
