It’s officially winter, officially cold and flu season, and officially when I’m most paranoid. I’m not much of a “germaphobe” and I don’t worry too often about my kids getting sick, but during this time of year I’m on high alert. Both of my kids have already had a nasty cold this winter. Yuck!
So, I’ve been researching the best tips to keep the kiddos healthy and happy during this sickly time of year.
4 Tips to Keep Kids Healthy
1. Wash your hands.
Wash your hands, wash the kids hands, wash the dogs hands if you need to. The number one tip from nurses is to make sure everyone is practicing good hand washing habits.
2. Get plenty of rest.
I know while we have been on winter break the bedtimes have gone out the window around here. Now, I’m wondering if that is contributing the their sickness.
3. Eat nutritious meals.
Same thing here. The holiday treats abound around here and we have all been eating not-so-great. When you’re full of the right nutrients your body is better equipped to fight off illness.
4. Keep stress to a minimum.
Yea, kids get stressed too. Crazy, full schedules can stress kids out. Being out of routines can stress kids out. Being forced to give everyone they only see once a year a hug can stress kids out. When your body is stressed, your immune system is impaired. Even once the holiday activities are over, make sure to protect your child’s schedule as much as possible and cut out extra activities that can be overwhelming.
But, what if you do get sick?
It happens no matter how hard we try- our kiddos get sick. It’s the worst. If your child does get sick it is so important to monitor the symptoms.
We love our Kinsa Smart Thermometer because it does so much more than tell your temperature.
The Kinsa Smart Thermometer communicates with your phone through bluetooth technology to help you have peace of mind when your child is sick. It has instant and accurate readings. Just download the app on your phone and you can get so much more than the temperature for this thermometer.
It offers real-time guidance on what to do next, tracks fever, symptoms and even medications. You can also send your health details directly to your doctor. And, for those of us that can never decide whether it’s time to see the doctor or not, it can advise you about that too.
The app itself is awesome. You can report your child as sick and communicate with other parents at your school about reported illnesses and things to look out for. It’s a mom’s dream!

Great article Lindsey! This is exactly what I’m telling the kids all the time. Unfortunately, most of the time they ignore to wash their hands. Although I’m trying hard to point out the bad things that can happen if they start to eat with this bad habit, but it’s easier for them just to sit and have a lunch. That’s why we go the hard way :)
Aside from that, the Kinsa Thermometer I think is a must-have equipment you need to have in these cold days no matter where you go with the kids.
You made some great points in the article, Lindsey. Keep up the good work!
