Adventure Science Center to celebrate Pi Day this Saturday
Special planetarium shows offered after hours
NASHVILLE, March 9, 2015—It only happens once in a century: This Saturday’s date aligns perfectly with the mathematical constant pi (π) – 3/14/15, but Adventure Science Center is taking it “five” steps further.
The Center is opening early this Saturday morning at 9:26 and 53 seconds to round out the first 10 digits of pi (3.141592653). Throughout Pi (π) Day, visitors will have the chance to learn that pi is more than just a piece of cake. It’s the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, and so much more!
More information is available at www.adventuresci.org/pi. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 around the world.
Pi Day Special Activities, from 9:26 a.m. to 3 p.m.:
· Escape from Pi: Escape from this maze using the next number in the sequence of the pi constant.
· Circumference Slicing: Discover how cutting a circle relates to pi.
· Project “Pi-day”: Learn how hat sizes and pi go hand in hand!
· Seeing in Pi-Definition: Use pi to figure out whether the height or circumference of a can is larger.
· The Missing PiZZA Link: Find out what pi has to do with tossing, cutting, and eating pizza.
· Eat Some Pie!
Pi Day activities are included with general admission.
Donate by Eating a Pizza ‘Pi’
As part of Pi Day, Adventure Science Center has teamed up with 312 Pizza Company in Germantown to raise funds for the Center. For every pizza purchased on Saturday, March 14 (Pi Day), 312 Pizza Company will donate 50 cents to the Science Center.
312 Pizza Company is located at 1201 5th Ave N. in Nashville. Call (615) 730-7888 or visit 312pizzaco.com.
Special thanks to 312 Pizza Company for their support of Adventure Science Center, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Second Saturday
In addition to Pi Day, Adventure Science Center offers its monthly after-hours Second Saturday series in the Sudekum Planetarium. From Dome Club Nashville’s immersive, artistic experiences to cosmic concerts featuring brilliant lasers and millions of stars, there’s a show to suit everyone’s tastes!
Show Schedule:
· 6 p.m. – Dome Club Nashville presents Coral Rekindling Venus
Take an extraordinary journey into the mysterious realm of fluorescent coral reefs, bioluminescent sea creatures, and rare marine life – without getting wet. Presented without narration, this sensory experience features beautiful scenery and a soaring musical score. Dramatic underwater photography reveals a complex community living just below the ocean’s surface and highlights this fragile ecosystem that needs our protection.
· 7 p.m. – Skies Over Nashville
Tour what’s up in the current night sky tonight: constellations, planets, and more. Ask questions and make requests – like “what does a black hole look like?” – during this live, interactive tour of the sky.
· 8:30 p.m. – Laser Queen
We Will Rock You with a Bohemian Rhapsody in a Cosmic Concert featuring the awesome sounds of Queen choreographed to lasers, special effects, and millions of stars. Guest appearances include my Best Friend, Princes of the Universe, and Flash Gordon.
· 9:30 p.m. – Laser Led Zeppelin
Join the Zeppelin crew for a unique experience in sight and sound as classic tunes are combined with state of the art technology. Lasers, stars, and fulldome special effects perform to such favorites as Whole Lotta Love, Kashmir, and of course – Stairway to Heaven.
· 10:30 p.m. – Laser Dark
Don’t be afraid of the dark. This alternative music experience features Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Rage Against the Machine, Garbage, Rammstein, and White Zombie. But the dark wave won’t really be dark, as brilliant lasers, millions of stars, and fulldome digital imagery carry you back to the industrial 90s.
Tickets for Skies Over Nashville are $3/show for members and $6/show for non-members. Laser shows and Dome Club Nashville shows are $6/show for members and $8/show for non-members. Exhibits are closed during Second Saturdayevents, unless noted otherwise.
Star Party
